In an expected, but nonetheless significant outcome, an arbitrator has determined that the city must switch more than 250,000 retired municipal workers to a cost-saving, private-sector Medicare Advantage plan from their current traditional Medicare plan.
He gave the city and the Municipal Labor Committee, the umbrella organization of public-sector unions, 25 days to finalize the plan with the provider, Aetna. The alternative would be to find “another revenue source which, inevitably, shall lead to premium contributions,” the arbitrator, Martin Scheinman, wrote toward the conclusion of his findings.
