As the city takes steps to significantly reduce carbon emissions by the end of the decade, unions representing steamfitters, architects and maintenance workers are urging officials to increase training and hiring of New Yorkers for green jobs.
Over 70 percent of the city’s greenhouse gas emissions come from buildings, according to the Mayor’s Office of Climate and Environmental Justice. As part of Local Law 97, which was passed in New York City in 2019, buildings of more than 25,000 square feet must meet new energy efficiency and greenhouse gas emissions standards by 2024.
