To the Editor: On Jan. 1, Bill de Blasio will no longer be Mayor but he will bequeath an abysmal disaster to New Yorkers. It's the monster he revived called Rikers that's been mired in misprision for the last eight years.
In a disgraceful act of betrayal to correction officers and persons in custody, de Blasio has allowed the jails to rot and fester in order to justify closing Rikers, which I submit has less to do with helping those incarcerated and more to do with the continued gentrification of NYC.
