Dems ain’t always right

To the editor:

One of the issues (as of this writing) holding up the state budget is bail reform.

I have proposed that all who can reasonably be considered dangerous, or who can be reasonably believed will not show up in court or who are repeatedly arrested remain in jail. All others should be freed.

This eliminates money as a factor. This way, a future Kalief Browder will not sit in Rikers for a minor offense when his guilt is questionable. This also would have assured that Messiah Nantwi, who was freed on bail less than two years ago for shooting at cops, would not have been free to allegedly murder two people in two days.

New Jersey has already eliminated bail. But the only ones I know of advocating bail elimination in New York are the April 12th Daily News editorial writers and New York State Senator Jake Ashby, a Republican.

I do agree that overall, Republicans are worse than Democrats. After all, Democrats have not supported making any of their presidents a dictator, banning all abortions and opposing all gun control. But they do, on a regular basis, defend the indefensible. When none of them in New York can bring themselves to support bail elimination and it takes a Republican to introduce such legislation, then they are part of the problem. Why should they object to eliminating bail? Are they getting large contributions from bail bondsmen?

I often tell friends that if Democrats were half-decent, the Republicans would be out of business, and vice versa. The refusal to eliminate bail, their support of the Medicare Advantage scam and on the federal level, support for a belligerent foreign policy and bloated defense budget, are just some issues that show that there's plenty wrong with Democrats. I will support them when they are right but will not spin-doctor for them when they are wrong.
