To the editor:

Concerning the "Wage theft pervasive in state" brief (The Chief, Aug. 25), here's an idea on how to get it taken seriously.

This would require the legislature to pass a law that would have wage theft treated like other forms of theft. If a burglar steals property from a worker's home, he or she is likely to be sent to prison when convicted. The same goes for a mugger who uses violence or the threat of it to steal a worker's money or a pickpocket. An employer stealing money from a worker's paycheck should get the same treatment.

Now getting the legislature to do anything right can seem like a miracle, especially when it comes to a law that would bring a great increase in the percentage of inmates who are rich and white. But it's about time for prison to become more diversified.
