FDNY inspectors score $29M settlement with city

FDNY fire protection inspectors have reached a $29.2 million settlement with the city as a result of a class-action racial discrimination lawsuit filed in 2020. According to the settlement’s terms, each of the department’s fire protection inspectors will receive between $30,000 and $35,000 once it is formally approved. The inspectors’ union, District Council 37 Local 2507, expects that to happen by the middle of next year.

“Our fire inspectors protect the lives and property of New Yorkers every day, and this settlement is a chance to benefit and also finally acknowledge the life-saving work of those that have been harmed by the City’s pay practices,” Oren Barzilay, the president of Local 2507, which represents fire protection inspectors, EMTs and paramedics, said in a statement shortly after the settlement was announced Thursday. “Hopefully these decisions will help other workers recover fair pay in the future.”
