Federal appeals court affirms $18 million payout to FDNY EMS

2013 lawsuit over unpaid work time

A federal appeals court has upheld a nearly $18 million jury verdict compensating more than 2,500 current and former FDNY EMTs for work that had gone unpaid. 

The EMTs, who filed suit in February 2013, won their verdict in 2019, with a jury deciding that the city had violated the Fair Labor Standards Act when it failed to properly compensate its EMS employees for work required both prior to the start of their scheduled eight-hour shifts and after.
