Suspensions in city public schools dropped 45 percent during the most-recent school year—largely thanks to the closing of schools prompted by the coronavirus pandemic.
There were 18,215 suspensions imposed during the 2019-2020 school year, compared to 32,801 a year earlier, according to data released by the Department of Education. During the three-and-a-half months of remote-learning after schools closed effective March 16, just six suspensions were administered.
