Re: "Shut it down!” (The Chief, Letters, Oct. 3): Recent media reports indicated that Democratic Majority Leader Schumer emerged from a meeting with President Trump optimistic about his willingness to discuss healthcare. A number of Democrats crossed the aisle to vote with Republicans to keep the government going.

The letter writer’s cavalier statement about shutting the government down is shockingly devoid of compassion. Depriving tens — if not hundreds — of thousands of their ability to earn a living will have a ripple effect across our economy: Unpaid child support. Compromised air travel security. Unpaid credit cards and loans. Higher bank fees and interest rates. Compromised medical research.

The provision of vital medical care and social services to veterans will also be compromised.

I recall a letter from the author, remembering the 1975 fiscal crisis when police officers were laid off. Is the author's disdain for Trump so great he has no issue with this hell raining down on the heads of others?
