To the editor
Seven other New York City hospitals, and six others across New York State, were able to afford to give nurses what the New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA) was demanding. So how can Mount Sinai, Montefiore and New York-Presbyterian claim they can't?
Montefiore has no problem paying its president and CEO, Dr. Philip Ozuah, $16.7 million a year. Executive VP and CEO Colleen Blye gets $3.68 million. Regional system senior VP of operations Susan Green-Lorenzo's compensation is $2.76 million. Senior VP and chief medical officer Andrew Racino is paid $2.27 million. Senior VP Peter Semczuk makes $2.02 million and assistant secretary Christopher S. Panczner receives $1.87 million.
How much has it cost the three hospitals to hire replacement nurses? One of the problems has been understaffing. So a solution to multiple management-created problems would be to agree to the striking nurses' demands and keep the replacement nurses. Obviously, that would solve the understaffing problem.
As a Montefiore patient myself, I want assurances that nurses treating me will not be exhausted, ill-paid and ill-treated.
