To the editor:
It is refreshing when the city’s legal apparatus can own up to mistakes it made in the justice system, which have regrettably been made at the taxpayer’s expense.
The Law Department is moving forward to stop it’s representation of former Mayor Eric Adams in a sexual assault lawsuit. The Corporation Counsel Steve Banks said in a statement that “I have determined that he is not entitled to representation by the City in this matter.”
Recently, the city announced similar actions regarding two other former city officials.
The New York Times observed this is “the latest indication that Mr. Mamdani, two and a half months into his tenure, is systematically washing his hands of some of the various legal entanglements that came to define his predecessor’s term in office.”
Hold that thought. It would also be welcome if the city discontinued fighting city retirees in the two court cases that concern the privatization of healthcare benefits and the imposition of burdensome copays.
Former workers who tirelessly devoted their lives to New York City service deserve to be be included in this reassessment. It would help make right the past years of uncertainty and stress we have endured.
It would be just.
