An audit of dozens of homeless shelter units uncovered infants jeopardized by living amid vermin, mold, exposed electrical outlets and other unsafe and unsanitary conditions, City Comptroller Scott Stringer revealed.
The Comptroller’s staffers visited 91 units at 13 shelters across the city between December 2019 and March—and found health and safety violations at every single one. Inspectors found 264 deficiencies, with 92 percent of the units having at least one. Thirty-two units had at least four deficiencies, including missing or broken window guards.
