Local 372 must re-run election

Just 436 votes cast on day the city had world’s poorest air quality

The largest local within District Council 37 has been ordered to re-run its election due to concerns the city’s poor air quality hampered turnout for the in-person contest.

The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees’ judicial panel announced Monday that it has voided the election of Local 372, which took place on June 7, the day New York City was reported to have the worst air quality of any city in the world because of smoke from wildfires in Canada. The state Department of Environmental Conservation issued an air quality health advisory for the city, and Mayor Eric Adams advised New Yorkers to stay indoors and avoid going outside unless they needed to.
