To the editor:
When recent polls showed President Trump's approval rating dropping to 38 percent, this was hardly comforting. ICE's treatment of migrants alone should be enough to end any humane person's support of Trump. But then so should have the insurrection. Yet 77 million people voted for him after that.
But one letter printed in another publication gives insight into the hard-heartedness of some of his supporters. The writer asks if critics of Trump and ICE would be willing to take migrants into their own homes.
Among the reasons this argument makes no sense is the fact that ICE is arresting people regardless of whether they are homeless and also because sensible people would be reluctant to take someone into their home whom they don't know, regardless of whether or not they were born in this country. Also, some people prefer to live alone.
But the idea that if you're not willing to house a migrant, then ICE has the right to treat them as horribly as they want is just plain evil.
Then again, if Trump supporters suddenly embraced morality, facts and logic, could any of them still support him?
The next time any American asks: how could Germans have supported Hitler, they should look at their own country. If you try to argue that Trump is not as bad, we'll only know that if he attains the absolute power that Hitler got. But the same elements of hatred, ignorance, scapegoating and refusal to face facts that fueled Hitler's support also fuels Trump's.

First and foremost, illegal immigration constitutes a blatant violation of the American legal framework. It poses a direct threat to democracy, undermines the rule of law, compromises the electoral system, and erodes civil cohesion. Furthermore, several Democratic officials and local leaders in liberal cities, including Massachusetts, New York City, Denver, and Chicago, have encouraged or requested that private residents open their homes to house illegal immigrants, a highly unwise and inappropriate appeal. In regard to your comparison of Mr. Trump to Hitler, comparing Mr. Trump to Hitler is baseless and far-fetched. In reality, the contemporary Democratic Party and its supporters are more politically and philosophically aligned with National Socialism than American democracy, but that's a separate topic for another time.

I've often wondered what percentage of Americans are self-centered, uncaring and lack any sense of decency. Thanks to Donald Trump we now know - somewhere around 35%.
Coincidentally, Hitler won the 1932 election for German Chancellor by getting roughly one-third of the popular vote. It's also coincidental (or not) that 77 million people is roughly one-third the population of America (340 million). Food for thought.

I’ve told you before, keep the hearts and flowers talk to yourself; it doesn’t affect me at all. I’m curious about the percentage of Americans who approve of breaking the law. You might be surprised to learn that most Americans disapprove of lawbreakers, even in this strange world.

Word Man, I am all too aware that appeals to a sense of humanity has no impact on folks who severely lack empathy. That was the point of Mr. Warren's letter and my comment.
Sociopaths can't be reached emotionally, they only care about themselves.
