To the editor:

Negotiations on a Medicare Advantage contract between the city, the Municipal Labor Committee and Aetna have proceeded under a general cone of silence, except for occasional public comments from Michael Mulgrew, the president of American Federation of Teachers, and Harry Nespoli, the head of the Municipal Labor Committee. But perhaps the most insightful remarks regarding Aetna came from Gregory Floyd, the president of Teamsters 237 and an EmblemHealth board member, in September 2021.

At the time, Aetna sued the city after they were passed over for alliance when the first Medicare Advantage contract was awarded. An article by journalist Carl Campanile read in part: “Noting that Aetna is one of the country’s largest private health-insurance companies,” Floyd said. “‘How greedy can you get?"

Floyd said contracts expire and that there will be opportunities for future business — but he added that Aetna is burning its bridges. “I have a long memory,” Floyd said.
