New York City recorded the lowest number of shooting incidents and victims on record through the first eight months of 2025, according to NYPD commissioner Jessica Tisch.
Between January and August, the NYPD logged 489 shooting incidents and 611 victims — edging below previous all-time lows set in 2018. The historically low figures helped drive a 6.7-percent overall reduction in major crimes in August compared with last year. Last month’s drop extended the city’s streak to seven consecutive quarters.
