“This is a case against a powerful politician who betrayed those he was supposed to serve to line his pockets,” said Assistant U.S. Attorney Carrie Cohen in her opening statement Nov. 3 at the trial of former Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver. “Year after year after year, Sheldon Silver was on the take.”
Defense attorney Steve Molo said Mr. Silver did nothing wrong. He said prosecutors were going after his client because U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara did not approve of the political system in New York State, adding, “Make no mistake, Mr. Silver did not sell his office.”
