To the Editor: I don't understand the surprise over the violent and seditious behavior in the Capitol Jan. 6. Radical right-wing groups have always been a serious danger in our nation, and Donald Trump just took advantage of the irrational hostility of these racist, white-supremacist groups.
I remember back around 1970, I was waiting to join the NYPD when there was a hiring freeze by Mayor John Lindsay. I went to job interviews with several Federal agencies, including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms. I was told by veterans of the Federal agencies that they considered the far-right-wing groups, including the John Birch Society and the Minutemen, to be far more dangerous than left-wing radicals.
