UFT opposition slate files suit to stop in-person voting

Alleges plan favors incumbents

One of the slates opposing the long-term leadership of the United Federation of Teachers has filed a lawsuit alleging that a change allowing in-person voting in the union’s upcoming election is not permitted under the union's constitution.

The union, which has an election scheduled for next month, has traditionally held mail ballot elections for its nearly 200,000 members. Although members have had limited options to vote in-person in the past, in-person voting usually took place at an office of the American Arbitration Association, the independent organization that has overseen previous UFT elections.
