A relaxed conversation

To the editor:

On a bright, sunny day, a liberal and an independent were relaxing on Montego Bay, chatting about worldly issues.

The liberal, with a dreamy look, said, “It’s amazing to be living in this time of progressivism. Think about all the ideas out there: Socialism, Communism, antisemitism, anti-Americanism and transgenderism. Now, let’s think carefully about these issues.”

The independent responded: "I’d like to share my political views. I’m a fan of a balanced economy, the arts, open dialogue, a free press, education, religious freedom, the US Constitution and the idea of sending astronauts to the moon—a dream our ancestors could only have dreamed of. Plus, when I look into the waters of time, I see America’s future quite clearly."

The liberal paused and wondered aloud, “Why can’t we find some common ground on these important issues?”

At that point, the Independent met the liberal’s gaze and replied, “It seems your unwillingness to compromise on vital issues is what’s been causing the deadlock.”

The liberal raised his eyebrows, a bit annoyed and about to speak, when the distant sound of bugles filled the air. This made the liberal, who had been sitting in a large, ornate chair, jump six feet high and shout, “Run for your life! The Republicans are coming!”
