What kind of Democrat?

Posted

To the editor:

Much debate once again revolves around whether Democrats should support so-called moderates or progressives. Less attention is given to issues and the quality of candidates.

Now I agree that taking control of the government from Republicans who are enabling President Donald Trump's threats to our freedom and to our very survival with their opposition to fighting climate change is essential. That's why I've been giving to the campaigns of most Democrats that I've received solicitations from.

But I have not given to "Democrats" who still think that I should get jail time for marijuana or who support the Republican proposed SAVE act that would restrict citizens' voting rights or who blindly support Israel as opposed to a peace agreement that would be fair to both sides.

Democrats are supposed to support living wages for workers, healthcare coverage for everyone, increasing reliance on renewable energy that will not result in our extinction, the wealthy paying a larger share of taxes which they can easily afford, cutting wasteful defense spending, a foreign policy that is not immoral and belligerent and increased access to education. There's something wrong if this is considered too left-wing.

Positions should also reflect reality. On law and order, putting dangerous criminals in prison is essential. This goes for both street criminals and an occupant of the White House. A criminal organization such as ICE is not law and order.

If Democrats gain the power to do so, they should not equivocate in abolishing it.

We need wisdom, decency and justice from Democrats instead of voting for those with the preferred label.

This essay reveals a far-left agenda hidden behind a plea for decency.

The author calls the Save Act a voter restriction. Emsuring only American citizens vote protects our democracy. It is common sense, not suppression.

Calling ICE a criminal organization is reckless. ICE agents stop human trafficking and keep fentanyl off our streets. Ending them invites lawlessness at our borders.

The progressive wish list of hugh taxes and regulations kills jobs. It hurts success and destroys small businesses. Cutting defense spending weakens us as China grows stronger. True security requires peace through strength—not wealness.

    The noisy press

    By Word Man

A dull world it surely would be.

    If everyone blindly agreed.

    Amidst the media’s noise,

Trump had to lead with poise.

He’s no old man of the sea.
