Jean Thielen saved every kind message from those he helped as a crisis intervention specialist for the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline’s specialized services for LGBTQ+ youth. In three years of 40-hour workweeks chatting and texting with distressed, sometimes self-harming queer young people, Thielen collected over 360 testimonies from those he helped, and was comforted by the support he was able to offer.
“Each one of those is a life that was saved,” Thielen said in an interview this week.
