The death of Deniz, a carriage horse who collapsed and died in Central Park earlier this week, has reignited debate over New York City's horse-carriage industry. But for the carriage drivers represented by TWU Local 100, the days following the horse's death have also brought a wave of threats, harassment and anti-immigrant attacks online.
Deniz died June 9 after collapsing while carrying two passengers through Central Park. The horse's cause of death has not yet been determined, and a full necropsy is being conducted at Cornell University's College of Veterinary Medicine. According to TWU Local 100, Deniz had last been examined by an NYPD veterinarian in March and was deemed fit for work.
