Transport Workers Union Local 264 has filed a grievance against Barnard College, alleging that it violated the union contract and federal law by laying off a pregnant woman to avoid paying her maternity leave and cut costs.
The local, which represents custodians, security officers and other workers at the private, women's liberal arts institution in Manhattan, claims that layoffs must be based on seniority and that less experienced workers should be let go first.
