On Tuesday, Lillian Bonsignore was sworn in as the 37th commissioner of the FDNY, becoming the first openly-gay commissioner and the first person from the department’s EMS ranks to ascend to the FDNY’s top job. She was sworn in by Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who announced that he had selected Bonsignore as commissioner just over a week before he became Mayor.
"I am keenly aware of the weight of this uniform and the history of the patches you wear on your sleeves,” Bonsignore said in her speech following her swearing-in "To lead this department is the greatest honor. "
