Three days after staff at the Growing Up Green Charter elementary school in Long Island City voted to unionize, the school’s leadership decided not to renew nine of the educators’ contracts and demoted another staffer, according to the United Federation of Teachers.
The workers, who began organizing in November, sought unionization to “have a greater voice for the kids,” said M. Gavin, a fourth-grade math teacher at the school.
