Deep and widespread cuts planned in the coming weeks by the administration of The New School to fill a $48 million budget hole has spurred the educators, staff members and students of the university into open rebellion. Already, workers and students at the university have held three protests outside of New School buildings and have successfully staved off the planned outsourcing of the Student Health Services program, workers said.
But as of Wednesday, university leadership is moving forward with instituting cuts as soon as Jan. 2 that include the elimination of several non-STEM undergraduate majors, a pause on admissions for most PhDs and the potential layoffs of dozens of full-time faculty. According to the American Association of University Professors, 169 non-unionized full-time faculty at The New School have already received letters requesting that they voluntarily separate from the university or retire.
