New York City has issued its first-ever permit for driverless-vehicle testing, and while the trial will last just a few weeks, one union official warned that the autonomous cars would wreak havoc on the city’s intricate — and crowded — grid.
The permit allows Waymo — formerly known as the Google Self-Driving Car Project — to operate up to eight self-driving cars in parts of Manhattan and downtown Brooklyn under what officials insist are the nation’s strictest safety requirements.
