Workers across the country are celebrating the 52nd annual EMS Week from May 17 to 23. In New York City, the Empire State Building was lit yellow, white and blue on May 17 to honor EMS workers.
At the FDNY's EMS academy in Fort Toten, Queens the department's EMTs and paramedics participated in the 24th annual FDNY EMS Week Competition.
EMS Week was authorized in 1974 by President Gerald Ford with the goal of celebrating all EMS workers in a period where providers of emergency medical services were becoming standardized nationwide. The week is typically marked by award ceremonies, competitions, memorials and more.
