A former FDNY lieutenant shot dead by police officers inside Brooklyn Methodist Hospital on Jan. 8 was a highly respected member of the FDNY community with no history of mental illness, those close to his family and who knew him during his tenure said. Michael Lynch joined the FDNY in 1999 with Ladder 107 after working as a cop in the NYPD and a bus operator in the MTA, according to multiple sources.
Lynch worked on the recovery effort following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks at ground zero. He later rose to the rank of lieutenant stationed at Engine 240 and retired from the department in 2008.
