FDNY’s Skudin, killed in storm, is honored

Posted

At Lido Beach West Sunday, family and friends, along with firefighters from the FDNY and the Long Beach Fire Department, held a paddle-out and joined hands to honor the life of Casey Skudin, a 16-year veteran of Rockaway Park’s Ladder Company 137, who died June 17 while vacationing in Asheville, North Carolina.

Skudin, 45, was visiting the Biltmore Estate with his family to celebrate Father’s Day and his upcoming birthday. He was killed when a tree limb snapped during a windstorm and crushed the Skudins’ car, pinning him in the wreckage. His wife and two younger sons managed to escape.

An avid surfer and longtime lifeguard, Skudin’s ashes were spread over the ocean. Funeral services were held Friday in Long Beach with hundreds of firefighters and trucks lining the streets to commemorate Skudin.

The FDNY Foundation has set up a scholarship fund for his two children. Visit www.fdnyfoundation.org/donate/ to contribute.
