Feds begin investigation into NYPD’s sex-crimes division

Cite victim claims of shaming and abuse

The Justice Department has begun an inquiry into the NYPD’s Special Victims Division, the unit responsible for investigating sex crimes, which for years has been dogged by complaints from women’s organizations and advocates that it is under-resourced and its investigators undertrained. 

In announcing the investigation Thursday, the office of the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, Damian Williams, said federal prosecutors here and in Washington, D.C., “will assess whether the SVD engages in a pattern or practice of gender-biased policing.”
