In militant mood, 32BJ kick-starts contract campaign

For 20,000 NYC office cleaners

Just after 3 last Thursday, hundreds of office cleaners belonging to Service Employees International Union Local 32BJ, many their workday done, converged on the block just west of Bryant Park, their colors — purple and yellow and white — bright in the afternoon sun, their chants — “Union! Power!” — bouncing off the glass towers flanking Sixth Avenue.

They gathered there to mark Justice for Janitors Day, commemorating the day 33 years ago when striking janitors in Los Angeles were set upon by police, resulting in dozens of injuries to the demonstrators.
