When Lillian Bonsignore was selected and sworn in as commissioner of the FDNY, the backlash from Elon Musk and other right-wing forces online was swift. Critics claimed that Bonsignore, the second woman and first openly-gay person to lead the department, was unqualified to lead the FDNY because she had never been a firefighter.
"People will die because of this," Musk wrote on X – formerly Twitter – about the 31-year FDNY veteran. “Proven experience matters when lives are at stake.”
