A Feb. 13 meeting of the Municipal Labor Committee has sparked controversy after leaked audio revealed discussions between union leaders about sharing municipal workers’ detailed health data with insurance companies in exchange for projected cost savings.
The recording and a MLC memo on the meeting indicates union leaders were told the NYC Employees PPO, which is offered to NYC employees jointly by UnitedHealthcare and EmblemHealth, could generate roughly $100 million in annual savings if at least 75 percent of plan participants agreed to share unredacted healthcare information with providers. That information includes prescription records tied to both workers and their families.
