Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced the appointment of former NYPD Lieutenant Edwin Raymond as New York City Sheriff May 29, installing a longtime police reform advocate to lead the agency after firing former Sheriff Anthony Miranda following years of labor disputes, internal turmoil and allegations of retaliation within the department.

During his NYPD career, Raymond served as commanding officer of community affairs for patrol borough Brooklyn North and held leadership roles in the 81st and 83rd Precincts.
