Mamdani breaks bread with city workers

Posted

Mayor Zohran Mamdani held an iftar dinner for city workers the evening of March 12 at the The Museum of the City of New York on the 23rd night of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. The city's first Muslim Mayor, Mamdani has been hosting iftar - the dinner and ceremony that marks the daily breaking of a fast during Ramadan - with many different New Yorkers nearly every evening.

He held an iftar dinner with FDNY firefighters and EMS workers in the FDNY Islamic Society and with the NYPD's Muslim Officers Society joined by the family of Didarul Islam who was shot and killed in the line of duty last year. He has also engaged in morning suhoor prayers with Muslim Department of Sanitation workers before their shifts began in February.

Most recently, Mamdani preyed and ate with incarcerated men at Rikers Island and held an iftar dinner with the New York City Taxi Workers Alliance.

"This is a city that is powered by its workers," Mamdani said in a speech at the iftar with city workers. "So, most of all, I want to thank every single city worker that is here tonight."
