New York’s Teamsters are ready to strike UPS

Bargaining breaks down over raises for part-timers

UPS Teamsters across New York City and Long Island hit the streets last week to show the logistics giant that they are ready and able to walk out on strike for the first time since 1997 if an agreement on a new contract covering more than 340,000 UPS workers isn't reached by the end of the day July 31. Thousands of workers have been participating in “practice pickets” before their shifts to organize and prepare themselves to strike for real. 

On Thursday morning last week, around 100 UPS workers marched in formation outside of a UPS facility in Brooklyn wielding signs that said, “just practicing for a just contract,” and chanting “if we don’t get it shut it down!” Last month, UPS workers across the country voted 97 percent to authorize a strike. Sean O’ Brien, president of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, has pledged to strike if the union and the shipping giant if a deal isn't reached by the end of the month.
