A group of marine diesel technicians and welders at the New York City Ferry voted unanimously to join the Transport Workers Union Thursday evening, marking the first time the storied transit union will represent workers on the city’s waterways.
Of the 65 ferry workers that TWU organized, 61 voted to join the union in an NLRB election, with no workers voting against the union. Key issues for the workers based in the Brooklyn Navy Yard include pay and benefits that union officials say have been watered down over time.
