Four years after former Mayor Eric Adams’ correction commissioner pushed out the Department of Correction’s head of investigations, Sarena Townsend, the city’s federal remediation manager has selected her to help lead an overhaul of investigations at Rikers Island — a move correction unions say they are prepared to accept despite lingering concerns.
According to a recent court filing, first reported by the Queens Eagle, the New York City Department of Correction will institute a new organizational structure that places a consolidated investigations division under the authority of remediation manager Nicholas Deml, while sharing final oversight with DOC Commissioner Stanley Richards.
