The Transport Workers Union has filed suit in State Supreme Court in Manhattan accusing the animal-rights group NYCLASS of waging a yearslong campaign of harassment and defamation aimed at eliminating the city’s horse-drawn carriage industry.
The complaint, filed Nov. 10, alleges that New Yorkers for Clean, Livable, and Safe Streets — a city nonprofit that advocates for banning the city’s horse-drawn carriages and replacing them with electric vehicles — has “deliberately and maliciously” misrepresented the conduct of carriage drivers, encouraged intimidation of workers and sought to financially undermine an industry the union represents.
