Young workers bear the brunt of pandemic job losses, comptroller finds

Nearly one-fourth of young men unemployed

Young workers in New York City — especially young men — are still struggling to recover from Covid-related job losses, according to a recent report from the state comptroller’s office.

The unemployment rate among 16-24 year olds is more than three times higher than the city’s average, Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli found. While the city’s overall unemployment rate was 5.6 percent, it stood at 17.9 percent among the city’s youngest workers, amounting to about 70,000 16-24 year olds who are unemployed, the report said.
